PLEASE WELCOME...

I want to take a moment to welcome Joshua Wolf Shenk's new book into the world.

Lincoln's Melancholy: How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled His Greatness (Houghton Mifflin) has finally made it's way from Shenk's apartment, to his editor, and out into the world. The story behind the story of this book was watching Josh battle his own demons for the last five years while undertaking this book and wondering aloud if he would ever be able to finish it. But he persisited instead of giving in to what he was feeling. He showed up and did the work in the face of feeling like nothing was working, as many of us are wont to feel from time to time , then time again. He worked his ass off, to put it bluntly. The result is a great book getting the glowing early reviews it deserves.

Congratulations, Josh.

"A significant contribution to the study of Lincoln and his battle with depression that will resonate with contemporary Americans."— Kirkus (starred review)

"An extraordinary story, for the depth of its scholarship and the lure of its style."—Mike Wallace, CBS News

"Shenk deals well with Lincoln's humor, a not-so-easy topic that the author tackles with the seriousness it deserves. Lincoln's Melancholy poignantly captures the subtle last phase of the president's life." William Lee Miller, The Washinton Post
