FAT PEOPLE ARE NOT THERE TO AMUSE US ON THE C TRAIN
by Chris Sullivan The little tourist girl had been whispering in her
Mother’s ear since 59th Street. Glancing over at the
large black woman across the subway car, she turned
again to her mother and held out her arms, doing the
universal sign for “big gut.” The black woman, seeing
this, shouted to the mother, “Nothing stopping me from slapping some manners into your daughter.” The Mom quickly shuffled her daughter to the next car. They got off at
81st Street. The Mother kept turning to make sure they
weren’t being followed as the made their way to the
stairs. The black woman was still repeating the words,
“I don’t play” when I got off at 103rd.
