NOTE FROM THE BASEMENT by Tony Dokoupil
You are not missing much in the Lehman basement library, otherwise
known as the Herbert Lehman Library of International and Public
Affairs, Columbia University. Mostly just page turning and the
occasional sneeze. Yet through Lehman’s doors one also finds the
peculiar point where vanity ends and greatness begins. For example,
someone putting chewed nail bits into the air or gyrating a
forefinger into their ear; these are Lehman’s stock characters.
Paradoxically, these are also heirs to the world’s elite places.
See, Lehman is base camp to the smooth, smart set that ends up
running countries. Put another way, Lehman is to political elites
what Disney’s Kids Incorporated was once to pop idols. My advice:
If in New York don’t miss an opportunity to gaze at our leaders
“Before they were stars..."
